Louis XV was the King of France from 1715 until his death in 1774.

His reign lasted almost 59 years. This made it the second longest reign in French history. Only his predecessor, Louis XIV, ruled for a longer time. Louis XV is sometimes called "Louis the Beloved," though historians debate his true legacy. His life and rule spanned a period of great scientific growth and massive political change.

He was not originally expected to become king. Several family members were ahead of him in the line of succession. However, disease changed everything for the royal family. His grandfather, his father, and his elder brother all died from illness. His governess, Madame de Ventadour, even hid him in a closet to protect him from doctors. Because of these deaths, the five-year-old Louis inherited the throne on 1 September 1715.

Since the king was a child, he could not rule by himself. A regent is an adult who governs for a minor. His great-uncle, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, became the Regent of France.

Philippe moved the young king from Versailles to Paris. During this time, the Regent restored the "droit de remontrance" to the Parlement of Paris. This was a legal right that allowed nobles to challenge the king's decisions. This change created a long conflict between the monarchy and the judicial bodies.

Louis received a very deep and scientific education.

His tutor was the Abbé André-Hercule de Fleury, who later became a Cardinal. Louis studied Latin, Italian, history, geography, astronomy, and mathematics. He also learned cartography, which is the science of making maps. He was so skilled in geography that he impressed the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great, in 1717.

Later in life, he supported the creation of science departments at the Collège de France. He also sponsored the "Cartes de Cassini," the first complete and accurate map of France.

As the king grew older, he took sole control of the kingdom. In 1723, he was officially declared of age.

He was crowned at the Cathedral of Reims on 25 October 1722. To ensure the monarchy continued, the court sought a bride for him. After many candidates were considered, he married Marie Leszczyńska in 1725. She was the 21-year-old daughter of Stanislaus I, the former king of Poland.

Louis XV's reign included many wars and territorial changes. In 1745, French forces won the Battle of Fontenoy.

However, the Seven Years' War ended in a difficult way for France. In 1763, Louis had to cede New France in North America to Great Britain and Spain. Despite these losses, he did add the Duchy of Lorraine and the Corsican Republic to France. These shifts changed the map of the world and the power of the French empire.

Historians often look at Louis XV's reign with a critical eye. Many believe his extravagance and incompetence weakened the country. They argue that his spending depleted the national treasury. This helped discredit the absolute monarchy, which is a system where a king has total power. Some scholars suggest he was actually popular during his life. They believe his bad reputation came later from revolutionary propaganda. Regardless, his grandson, Louis XVI, inherited a kingdom facing financial disaster. This situation helped set the stage for the French Revolution in 1789.
