He also married Marie Leszczyńska, the daughter of the king of Poland.

As the king grew older, he took sole control of the kingdom. In 1723, he was officially declared of age.

He was crowned at the Cathedral of Reims on 25 October 1722. To ensure the monarchy continued, the court sought a bride for him. After many candidates were considered, he married Marie Leszczyńska in 1725. She was the 21-year-old daughter of Stanislaus I, the former king of Poland.

Louis XV's reign included many wars and territorial changes. In 1745, French forces won the Battle of Fontenoy.

However, the Seven Years' War ended in a difficult way for France. In 1763, Louis had to cede New France in North America to Great Britain and Spain. Despite these losses, he did add the Duchy of Lorraine and the Corsican Republic to France. These shifts changed the map of the world and the power of the French empire.

Historians often look at Louis XV's reign with a critical eye. Many believe his extravagance and incompetence weakened the country. They argue that his spending depleted the national treasury. This helped discredit the absolute monarchy, which is a system where a king has total power. Some scholars suggest he was actually popular during his life. They believe his bad reputation came later from revolutionary propaganda. Regardless, his grandson, Louis XVI, inherited a kingdom facing financial disaster. This situation helped set the stage for the French Revolution in 1789.
