In 1770, Louis married Marie Antoinette at age fifteen.

Louis became the King of France on 10 May 1774. He tried to change the government using new ideas. He wanted to make things more fair for non-Catholics. He even tried to stop the death penalty for some people. However, the noble people in France did not like these changes. They fought against his new rules. Louis also changed how the grain market worked. This was meant to help, but it made bread prices go up. In 1775, a bad harvest led to food shortages and riots.
France also faced many money problems during his reign. Louis helped the colonists in North America fight for independence. This help was part of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
Things grew much worse as the French Revolution began. People were angry with the king and his wife. There were violent riots, like the storming of the Bastille.

Louis XVI was the final monarch of France before the monarchy collapsed during the French Revolution. Born Louis-Auguste on 23 August 1754, he was the son of the Dauphin, Louis, and Maria Josepha of Saxony. He became the Dauphin, or heir apparent, in 1765 after his father died. In 1770, he married Marie Antoinette, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. Louis eventually ascended to the throne on 10 May 1774. He reigned as King of France and Navarre until the monarchy was abolished in 1792.
As a young boy, Louis-Auguste was known for being shy and studious. He excelled in subjects like Latin, history, geography, and astronomy. His tutors noted his intelligence and excellent judgment in mathematics and physics. He also enjoyed the technical hobby of locksmithing. This interest required a strong understanding of mechanics. His education was very strict and conservative. Some historians suggest this upbringing contributed to his indecisive nature as a leader.
The marriage between Louis and Marie Antoinette was complicated by political tensions. The French public disliked the alliance with Austria following the Seven Years' War. This made Marie Antoinette seem like an unwelcome foreigner. The couple was very young and had only met two days before their wedding. They struggled to have children for many years, which led to public mockery. Obscene pamphlets, known as libelles, questioned the king's ability to produce an heir. Eventually, the couple had four children.

During his reign, Louis attempted to implement Enlightenment ideas to reform the government. He sought to increase tolerance for non-Catholics and abolish the death penalty for deserters. However, the French nobility resisted these changes with great hostility. Louis also attempted to deregulate the grain market. This was an economic policy suggested by his minister, Turgot. Instead of helping, it caused bread prices to rise. During the bad harvest of 1775, this led to food scarcity and revolts.
France faced a severe financial crisis due to its involvement in foreign conflicts. Louis XVI provided active support to North American colonists seeking independence from Great Britain. This support was finalized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
Tensions escalated into the French Revolution as the middle and lower classes opposed the aristocracy. Violent riots, such as the storming of the Bastille, forced Louis to recognize the National Assembly. His perceived indecisiveness led many to view him as a tyrant. In June 1791, Louis attempted to flee to Varennes. This unsuccessful flight undermined his legitimacy and suggested he wanted foreign help to regain power. Following this, France moved toward a constitutional monarchy and eventually a republic.
The revolution grew more radical as anti-clericalism increased. This led to the abolition of the dîme, a religious land tax. In August 1792, during a period of civil and international war, Louis was arrested. The monarchy was officially abolished on 21 September 1792. The new French First Republic was proclaimed shortly after. Louis was no longer treated as a king but as a citizen named Citoyen Louis Capet.
Louis XVI was tried by the National Convention, which acted as a special tribunal. He was found guilty of high treason. On 21 January 1793, he was executed by guillotine.
