Louis was a very shy and quiet boy. He spent much of his time studying history, geography, and astronomy. He was also quite good at math and physics. He even enjoyed the hobby of locksmithing. This skill required great focus and steady hands.

In 1770, Louis married Marie Antoinette at age fifteen.

She was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. Their marriage was difficult for a long time. They were nearly strangers when they first met. They did not have children for several years. This caused much gossip and many unkind pamphlets in France. Eventually, they had four children together.

Their only child to grow up was a daughter named Marie Thérèse.

Louis became the King of France on 10 May 1774. He tried to change the government using new ideas. He wanted to make things more fair for non-Catholics. He even tried to stop the death penalty for some people. However, the noble people in France did not like these changes. They fought against his new rules. Louis also changed how the grain market worked. This was meant to help, but it made bread prices go up. In 1775, a bad harvest led to food shortages and riots.

France also faced many money problems during his reign. Louis helped the colonists in North America fight for independence. This help was part of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Helping the Americans cost France a lot of money. This created a huge debt for the country. People began to feel very unhappy with the old way of ruling. In 1789, Louis called a meeting called the Estates General. This meeting was meant to help solve the nation's problems.

Things grew much worse as the French Revolution began. People were angry with the king and his wife. There were violent riots, like the storming of the Bastille.

Louis tried to flee the country in June 1791. This trip to Varennes made people trust him even less. By 1792, the monarchy was ended and France became a republic. Louis was arrested and put on trial. He was found guilty of high treason. He was executed by guillotine on 21 January 1793.
