Louis XVIII was a king who ruled France during a very changing time.

He was born on November 17, 1755, at the Palace of Versailles. His full name was Louis Stanislas Xavier. He was a member of the Bourbon family. His grandfather was the reigning King Louis XV. Because of his family, he was born with the title of Count of Provence.

As a young man, Louis had a very busy life. He was a smart student who studied the classics. He was taught by many religious teachers and priests. His education focused on learning how to reason correctly. By the age of 15, he had his own household. This household was very large and expensive to run. In 1773, he had 390 servants helping him.

Life became much harder when the French Revolution began. In 1791, Louis had to leave France. He lived in exile in other places for 23 years. He stayed in countries like Prussia, Great Britain, and Russia.
