Born in France, she was the daughter of a seamstress named Anne Bécu. Her early life was not easy or wealthy. As a young girl, she lived in Paris after her mother's acquaintance helped them. Jeanne worked many different jobs to earn money. She sold small trinkets on the streets. Later, she worked as an assistant in a hat shop called "La Toilette." Eventually, her great beauty caught the attention of many people in high society.

Jeanne's life changed when King Louis XV of France took an interest in her.

To live at the royal court, she had to follow strict rules. The King required her to be married to a nobleman. On September 1, 1768, she married Count Guillaume du Barry. To help her fit in, a false birth certificate was made. This paper made it look like she was from a noble family. It also made her appear three years younger than she really was. These steps allowed her to become the official mistress of the King.

Life at the Palace of Versailles was full of both luxury and tension.

Jeanne lived a very expensive life with many fine gowns and jewels. She was known to be soft-hearted and often asked the King for mercy for others. However, many noblewomen did not like her. They were angry because she came from a poor background. Even Marie Antoinette, the future Queen, showed her contempt. Some people even wrote mean pamphlets to try to remove her from the court. Despite the gossip, Jeanne stayed in her position until the King died.

One of the most famous stories from her time involves a massive piece of jewelry.

In 1772, King Louis XV asked jewelers to make a huge diamond necklace for Jeanne. It was estimated to cost two million livres. The necklace was so expensive that it caused a great scandal. Even though the King died before it was fully paid for, the trouble it caused helped start the French Revolution. This shows how the spending of the royals made many people unhappy with the government.

After the King died in 1774, Jeanne had to leave the palace life behind.

She retired to an estate near Rueil to live in peace. However, the French Revolution eventually brought great change and danger to France. During the Reign of Terror, Jeanne was put in prison. She was accused of treason for helping people try to escape the revolution. In December 1793, she was executed by guillotine. Her life remains a famous story of how much one person's life can change.
