Marie Duplessis was a well-known woman in 19th-century France.

She was born Alphonsine Rose Plessis on January 15, 1824. Her parents were Marin Plessis and Marie Deshayes. She grew up in a place called Nonant-le-Pin in Normandy. When she was 15, she moved to the big city of Paris. At first, she found work in a dress shop. She was a very attractive young woman with a bright smile.

As she grew older, Marie became a famous courtesan. A courtesan is a woman who has wealthy lovers. She worked hard to be a good conversationalist. Marie learned how to read and write. She also studied news about the world. This helped her talk with important people at social events. She even added "Du" to her name to sound more noble.

Marie was a very busy person in Paris society. She hosted gatherings called salons for many guests. Writers, artists, and politicians came to her home to talk. She enjoyed going to the opera and riding in the Bois de Boulogne. One of her lovers was the writer Alexandre Dumas fils. She also had a relationship with the composer Franz Liszt. In 1844, she met Count Gustav von Stackelberg at a spa. He gave her a large six-room apartment in Paris.

Marie's life was very short but full of famous people. She was the mistress of the nobleman Count Édouard de Perregaux. She was also briefly married to him. Sadly, Marie became very sick with tuberculosis. She died on February 3, 1847, when she was only 23 years old. Her husband and Count Stackelberg were with her at the end. Hundreds of people attended her funeral at Montmartre Cemetery. After she died, her things were sold to pay her debts.

Even after her death, Marie's story lived on through art. Alexandre Dumas fils wrote a novel called *La Dame aux Camélias* in 1848. The main character, Marguerite Gautier, was based on Marie. This book was later turned into a play in 1852. A famous composer named Giuseppe Verdi used the play to create the opera *La traviata* in 1853. Many movies have also been made from her story. A journalist named Romain Vienne even wrote a book to tell the true facts about her life.
