Creating these figures is a very careful task. An artist must shape the wax to match a face. Tussaud made many famous portraits of celebrities. She sculpted leaders like Benjamin Franklin and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In some cases, she even made death masks. These are casts made from the faces of people who had died. She also made full body casts of famous people from the French Revolution. This work required great skill and attention to detail.

Marie was born in Strasbourg, France, on December 1, 1761. Her father died in the Seven Years' War before she was born. When she was six, she moved to Bern, Switzerland. There, she lived with a doctor named Philippe Curtius. He was a skilled wax modeler who taught her his craft. In 1777, she made her very first wax figure. It was a sculpture of the thinker Voltaire.

Life was not always easy for Marie. During the French Revolution, she was arrested. She was even prepared for execution by a machine called a guillotine. Luckily, she was released and survived. After Curtius died in 1794, Marie inherited his wax collection. She married François Tussaud in 1795. In 1802, she moved to London with her son, Joseph. She traveled around the British Isles for many years. In 1835, she finally opened her first permanent museum on Baker Street.

Madame Tussaud's legacy lives on through her family and her museums. Her son François took over the business after she retired. Then her grandson Joseph and great-grandson John Theodore Tussaud ran it too. Now, the museum is owned by a company called Merlin Entertainments. There are branches in many places like New York, Tokyo, and Beijing. Even a museum in Prague opened recently in 2019. Her life is even found in stories, books, and video games.
