He was known for many different kinds of work. He made small round metal pieces called medallions. He also made busts, which are sculptures of a person's head and shoulders. People loved his work because it showed great skill. He could make stone look very real and full of feeling. His art helped tell stories about important people and history.

Making these works was a slow and careful job. He would often model a person's face to capture their look. For some works, he used marble to carve beautiful shapes. For others, he used bronze to make strong statues. He even made a bust of the Marquis de Lafayette. This was a gift for the United States Congress. Sadly, a fire in the Library of Congress destroyed it in 1851.

He worked hard to make sure every detail was just right.

David was born in Angers in 1788. His father was a wood carver and an ornamental sculptor. David studied art in the studios of Jean-Jacques Delusse and Philippe-Laurent Roland. In 1809, he joined the studio of the painter Jacques-Louis David. To show his roots and stand out, he took the name David d'Angers. He won many prizes at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1811, he won the Prix de Rome. This prize allowed him to live in Rome for five years.

During his life, David created a huge amount of art. He made more than 500 medallions of different people. He traveled to England, Germany, and Italy for his work. In 1827 and 1829, he visited Germany for professional reasons. He made a famous statue of Gutenberg in Strasbourg. He also made a monument to the Greek hero Markos Botsaris. The writer Victor Hugo said this statue was beautiful.

David's work is still found in many famous places today.

Many of his sculptures are in museums you might visit. You can see his work in the Louvre in Paris. His large statues are also in the Père Lachaise Cemetery. He made many monuments for tombs there, like the one for General Gobert.

He was also a very kind man to others. He once carved a marble statue of the poet Rouget de Lisle. He sold the work to help the poet during a hard time. This shows how much he cared about people and art.
