He was the most important artist of his time. His work changed how people thought about art. Before him, many liked the Rococo style. That style was often light and playful. David helped move art toward Neoclassicism. This style was more serious and strict. It focused on clear lines and strong feelings. His paintings helped people think about important ideas. He lived through many changes in the French government. His life and art were tied to the history of France.

As a young boy, David loved to draw.

He often drew in his school notebooks during class. He even hid behind his teacher's chair to draw. His family wanted him to be an architect. However, he worked hard to become a painter. He studied under the artist François Boucher. Later, he studied with Joseph-Marie Vien. David also worked very hard to win a prize. This prize allowed him to travel to Rome. He even went on a hunger strike to show his passion. Finally, he won the prize in 1774.

In Italy, David learned many new things.
