Jacques-Louis David was the preeminent French painter of the Neoclassical era.

His work marked a major shift in artistic taste during the late 18th century. Before David, the Rococo style was popular for its light and playful nature. David replaced this frivolity with a cerebral brand of history painting. His style embraced classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling. This new approach harmonized with the moral climate of the Ancien Régime. David's career was deeply intertwined with the political shifts of France. He lived through six different political regimes during his lifetime.

David's path to greatness began with a difficult childhood in Paris.

Born on August 30, 1748, he lost his father to a duel when he was nine. His mother left him in the care of wealthy architect uncles. Although he attended the Collège des Quatre-Nations, he was not a focused student. He was often preoccupied with drawing in his notebooks. He once admitted to hiding behind his instructor's chair to draw during class. While his family wanted him to pursue architecture, David insisted on painting. He first studied under the Rococo master François Boucher. Eventually, Boucher sent him to Joseph-Marie Vien to learn a more classical style.

To reach the highest level of art, David had to win the prestigious Prix de Rome.

This prize funded a three- to five-year stay at the French Academy in Rome. Winning was difficult, and David faced several setbacks. He failed three consecutive attempts to win the award. After his second loss in 1772, he even went on a hunger strike for two and a half days. His persistence finally paid off in 1774. He won the prize for his painting, *Erasistratus Discovering the Cause of Antiochus' Disease*. This victory allowed him to travel to Italy with his mentor, Joseph-Marie Vien.

In Italy, David underwent intense artistic development.

He lived at the Palazzo Mancini, which served as the French Academy's Rome outpost. While there, he studied 17th-century masters like Caravaggio and Poussin. He also toured the newly excavated ruins of Pompeii in 1779. This experience deepened his belief in the eternal power of classical culture. He met the painter Raphael Mengs, who advocated for a rigorous study of ancient models. Mengs' approach profoundly influenced David's pre-revolutionary work. David also filled twelve sketchbooks with drawings. These became essential model books for his studio for the rest of his life.

David's paintings often used classical stories to explore modern political ideas.

In *The Oath of the Horatii*, he depicted the republican ideal of the general. The painting shows three brothers in rigid, confident stances. This masculinity is contrasted with the soft, swooning figures of the women. In *The Death of Socrates*, he portrayed the philosopher as calm and at peace. The painting was so powerful that critics compared it to the works of Raphael. Another major work, *The Lictors Bring to Brutus to the Bodies of His Sons*, became a Republican symbol. It depicted a father sacrificing his own family for the good of the republic.

During the French Revolution, David became a highly influential and controversial figure.

He was an active supporter of the Revolution and a friend of Maximilien Robespierre. As a member of the Jacobin Club, he even voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. During this period, he acted effectively as a dictator of the arts under the French Republic. He later aligned himself with Napoleon, the First Consul of France. Under Napoleon, David developed his Empire style, which used warm Venetian colors. He painted famous images of the leader, such as *Napoleon Crossing the Alps*.

David's legacy is defined by his massive influence on French art. He was a prolific artist whose imagery entered the collective imagination. He taught approximately 50 pupils, making him a central figure in academic Salon painting. His career spanned many changes, from the monarchy to the rise of Napoleon. After Napoleon fell from power and the Bourbons were restored, David faced exile. He moved to Brussels in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. He remained there until his death on December 29, 1825. His works remain essential studies of history, duty, and the human spirit.
