He lived during a time called the Enlightenment. This was a period of great thought and new ideas. Houdon was known for making portrait busts and statues. A bust is a sculpture of a person's head and shoulders. He captured the faces of many thinkers and leaders. These people were important to history and science. His art helped people remember what these famous figures looked like.

Making these sculptures was a very careful job.

For his famous work with George Washington, Houdon used special tools. Washington sat for models made of wet clay. He also wore a plaster life mask. This mask helped Houdon see every detail of his face. Houdon made many different versions of Washington. Some showed the leader in a military uniform. Other statues showed him wearing a Roman toga.

Houdon began his journey in Versailles, France.

He was born on March 20, 1741. He studied art at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. He learned from teachers like Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. In 1761, he won a prize called the Prix de Rome. This prize allowed him to study in Italy. While in Rome, he made a famous anatomical model. This model is called an écorché and helps artists study muscles.

He made a bust of Voltaire in 1778. He also sculpted Denis Diderot and Thomas Jefferson. Benjamin Franklin invited Houdon to visit Mount Vernon in 1785. This trip was for the Washington project. Houdon lived through the French Revolution. He stayed safe and later worked for the French Empire. In 1804, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.

Houdon's work still reaches us today. His sculptures were used as models for many things. In the late 1800s, people used his art for U.S. postage stamps. These stamps showed Washington's face in profile. This shows how his skill lasted for a long time. Even though he died in Paris in 1828, people still look at his art. He helped turn the faces of history into lasting shapes.
