A sculptor is an artist who makes shapes from clay or stone. Houdon was very good at making portrait busts. A bust is a statue of just a person's head and shoulders. He made busts of many thinkers and leaders. These people lived during a time called the Enlightenment.

Houdon made a famous statue of George Washington.

Benjamin Franklin asked Houdon to come to America for this work. Washington sat for wet clay models. He also wore a plaster life mask. This mask helped Houdon make the art look very real. He made many versions of Washington. Some showed him in a uniform. Others showed him in a long robe called a toga.

Houdon lived through a big change in France called the French Revolution. He stayed safe during this hard time. Later, he worked for the French Empire. He was even named a Chevalier. This is a high honor. His work was so good that it appeared on U.S. stamps. People used his art to show Washington's face on mail.
