He lived during the Enlightenment, a period of intense intellectual growth. Houdon specialized in portrait busts and full statues of important figures. His subjects included philosophers, inventors, and major political leaders. These works captured the likenesses of people like Denis Diderot and Voltaire. His art served to document the faces of the era's most influential minds.

Houdon used precise methods to ensure his sculptures were highly accurate. For his famous project with George Washington, he used specific modeling techniques. Washington sat for models made of wet clay to capture his features. Houdon also utilized a plaster life mask of Washington's face. This mask provided a direct physical record of the leader's appearance. These models allowed Houdon to create many different versions of the president. Some versions showed Washington in a military uniform. Other versions depicted him as a Roman Consul wearing a toga.

His artistic career included several distinct types of sculpture. He was well known for portrait busts, which are sculptures of a head and shoulders. He also created full-body statues and anatomical models. One of his most significant anatomical works was the écorché created in 1767. An écorché is a model that shows the muscles of the body. This specific model has served as a guide for artists for many years. He also produced semi-nude sculptures, such as Winter and Bather, during the 1780s.

Houdon's journey began in Versailles, France, where he was born on March 20, 1741. He began his formal training in 1752 at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. There, he studied under masters like Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. In 1761, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome. This award allowed him to travel to and study in Italy. During his time in Rome, he created a statue of Saint Bruno for a local church. After four years in Italy, he returned to Paris to expand his practice.

His professional life was marked by significant honors and social connections. In 1771, he became a member of the Académie de peinture et de sculpture. He later served as a professor there starting in 1778. Houdon was also a member of the masonic lodge known as Les Neuf Sœurs. This group allowed him to meet figures like Benjamin Franklin and John Paul Jones. In 1804, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. Later, in 1809, he was created a Chevalier de l'Empire. This title became hereditary through letters patent in 1816.

Houdon's life was shaped by the political shifts of France. He was associated with the court of Louis XVI, which was considered bourgeois at the time. Because of these connections, he lost favor during the French Revolution. However, he managed to avoid imprisonment during this turbulent period. When the French Consulate and Empire rose, he regained his standing. He even joined the artistic team for the Column of the Grande Armée at Wimille. This shows how his skill remained valuable across different political eras.

His legacy continues to influence how we see historical figures. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his work appeared on U.S. postage stamps.

These stamps used his sculptures as models for profile portraits of Washington. His ability to capture character through stone and clay remains a standard in portraiture. Houdon died in Paris on July 15, 1828. He was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery, leaving behind a massive body of work that defines the Enlightenment era.
