Many people call him the greatest Neoclassical artist. His work was inspired by the classical revival. He also looked to the Baroque style for ideas. However, he avoided being too dramatic or too cold. His marble statues felt very lifelike and smooth. People across Europe admired his amazing skill.

Canova learned his craft at a very young age.

His grandfather, Pasino Canova, was a skilled stonemason. Pasino owned a quarry and taught Antonio how to carve. By age nine, Antonio made small shrines from Carrara marble. He later studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. He also worked as an apprentice for other artists. These early years helped him master the hard job of shaping stone. He practiced by making models out of clay.

His career grew quickly through many important commissions.

He worked for many powerful leaders and royal families. Napoleon Bonaparte was one of his most famous patrons. Canova made a statue of Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker. He also created Venus Victrix, which showed Pauline Bonaparte as Venus. He even made a marble bust of George Washington in 1820.

This statue was sent to North Carolina, though the original was later lost to fire.

In his later years, Canova focused on his faith and home.

He designed and built the Tempio Canoviano in Possagno. This temple was inspired by the Parthenon and the Pantheon. He wanted the building to be a testament to his piety. Canova died in Venice on October 13, 1822, at age 64. He left his money to finish his special temple. His life changed the way people saw marble art forever.
