His real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal. People often called him Canaletto, which means "little Canal." He was a master of vedute, which are paintings of city views.

He also made capricci, or imaginary architectural fantasies. These works were loved for their bright colors and skill. People still value his art today for its beauty and detail.

To make his art, Canaletto often painted "from nature." This means he worked outside instead of just in a studio.

He was very good at using perspective to make buildings look real. Some experts think he used a camera obscura to help him. A camera obscura is a tool that projects images onto a surface. It can make far-away objects look a bit blurry. This helped him capture how light and distance look in real life.

Canaletto grew up in a family of artists.

His father, Bernardo Canal, was also a painter. Giovanni learned the craft by working as an apprentice with his father. He also worked as a theatrical scene painter for operas. In 1718, he traveled to Rome to work on opera scenery. While there, he was inspired by the painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini. He soon began painting the daily life of the city.

His career took him to many famous places.

Between 1746 and 1756, he lived and worked in England. He painted many views of London and places like Warwick Castle. A businessman named Joseph Smith became his main supporter in Venice. Smith bought nearly fifty paintings and one hundred fifty drawings. In 1762, King George III bought Smith's large collection for £20,000.

This helped many of his works join the Royal Collection.

Canaletto's style was very special for his time.

His use of light and color was very modern. Some people say his work helped lead to a style called Impressionism. He was so skilled that many European kings wanted his paintings. Even today, his works sell for very high prices at auctions. He died in Venice in 1768 and was buried at San Lio.
