He was a leader in the Neoclassical style of art. This style focused on the beauty of ancient Greek and Roman ideas. Mengs wanted to create art that felt balanced and perfect. He believed great art could combine many different strengths. He looked to the shapes of Greek art for design. He also loved the colors used by the painter Titian. He studied the light and shadow used by Correggio. By mixing these ideas, he helped change how people painted.

Making art was a big part of Mengs's life. He worked on many different kinds of projects. Sometimes he painted large frescoes, which are pictures made on wet plaster walls.

He once painted a huge fresco on a church dome in Rome. He also made oil paintings on canvas. One famous job was making a copy of a painting called The School of Athens. He did this for a Duke in London between 1752 and 1755. He even wrote books about art in three different languages. These books explained his many ideas about how to paint well.

Anton was born on March 12, 1728. He was born in a place called Ústí nad Labem. His father, Ismael Mengs, was a painter from Denmark.

He even had a famous rivalry with an Italian painter named Pompeo Batoni. He was also friends with the well-known Giacomo Casanova. These connections helped make him a very famous man.

Today, we can still see Mengs's work in many museums. His portraits show a very careful attention to small details. Some of his paintings are in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Others are in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He died in Rome in June 1779. He left behind twenty children. Even though his life ended in difficult times, his art remains important. He helped bridge the gap between old and new styles. He is remembered as a master of his craft.
