He lived in the prosperous city of Nuremberg. Dürer was a painter, a printmaker, and a thinker. He was known for making high-quality woodcut prints. These prints helped him become famous across Europe. He also studied the rules of art and math. His work changed how people in Northern Europe saw art.

Making art was a careful and skilled job for Dürer. He made woodcuts by designing images on wood blocks. A specialist craftsman would then cut the design into the wood. Dürer also loved making engravings. For these, he used a sharp tool called a burin. This tool helped him create many tiny, beautiful details. He could use the burin to show the texture of skin.

He even made watercolours and large paintings on wood. He used math to help him draw things in the right place.

Dürer was born on May 21, 1471.

His father, Albrecht the Elder, was a successful goldsmith. Dürer learned the basics of drawing and metalwork from him. At age fifteen, he became an apprentice to Michael Wolgemut. Wolgemut ran a large workshop in Nuremberg. Dürer might have helped make the famous Nuremberg Chronicle in 1493. He later married Agnes Frey in 1494 when he was twenty-three. He lived a busy life of making art and traveling.

Dürer's life was full of important meetings and travels. He spent four years on a journey called Wanderjahre to learn new skills.

He traveled to places like Colmar, Basel, and Strasbourg. He also made two big trips to Italy. In Venice, he met the artist Jacopo de' Barbari. Dürer also knew famous artists like Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. From 1512, he was even supported by Emperor Maximilian I. He died on April 6, 1528.

Many people today study Dürer because he mixed different styles. He brought Italian ideas into the art of Northern Europe. He introduced classical shapes and the study of the human body.

He wrote books about how to draw human proportions correctly. He also wrote about using math for perspective in art. His many self-portraits show us how he saw himself.

Because he wrote so much, we know a lot about his life. His art remains a very important part of history.
