He is known for making religious art that feels very powerful. His paintings use bright colors and dramatic light to show deep feelings. Unlike many other artists of his time, he did not follow the classic styles of the Renaissance. Instead, he kept using the older styles from Central Europe. This made his work look very different from other painters. Many people find his art to be full of awe and emotion.

His most famous creation is called the Isenheim Altarpiece.

He worked on this huge project from about 1512 to 1516. The altarpiece is massive, standing 2.65 meters high. It is over 5 meters wide at its widest part. It uses twelve panels and nine different images. The art changes depending on how you open the wings. You can see three different views based on the season or special occasions. One view shows a Crucifixion with Saint Sebastien and Saint Anthony. Another view shows the Resurrection and an Angelic Concert.

We do not know every detail about his life. Most historians think he was born around 1475.

He may have started his career as an apprentice. One source says he worked on an altarpiece by Albrecht Dürer around 1505. In 1511, he became an artist for the Archbishop of Mainz. He also lived in Frankfurt for a time. He married a woman named Anna around 1510. His life was not always easy or happy. He may have died in 1528 or 1532.

Not much of his art has survived through the years. Only ten paintings and thirty-five drawings still exist today. Some of his other works were lost at sea during a war. For a long time, people thought he was actually Albrecht Dürer. Dürer was a different, very famous artist. People only realized Grünewald was a separate person in the late nineteenth century. This discovery made him a very popular figure again. Now, his unique style is celebrated by many people.

Grünewald's work still inspires people today. Many writers and musicians have used his life for their stories. The composer Paul Hindemith wrote an opera about him in 1938. Some authors have even written books inspired by his paintings. His art shows the strength of human feeling. The Lutheran Church even remembers him today. They celebrate him as an artist and a saint on April 6. This is a special day shared with Dürer and Cranach.
