He lived a long time ago during the late medieval period. Many people know him because of his famous book. This book is called The Imitation of Christ. It is a book used for devotion, which means it helps people focus on their faith.

He was part of a group called the Augustinians. He also followed a movement called the Modern Devotion. This movement helped people live in a way that matched their religious rules.

Thomas spent much of his life writing and copying books by hand. This job is called being a scribe or a copyist. He was very good at this hard job. He actually copied the entire Bible at least four times. One of these large copies is kept in Darmstadt, Germany. It is spread out into five different volumes.

Besides copying, he wrote many of his own books. He wrote about the lives of other important people in his faith. He also wrote many sermons to teach new members of his group.

Thomas was born in a town called Kempen in the Rhineland. His family had interesting jobs. His father, Johann, worked as a blacksmith. His mother, Gertrud, was a schoolmistress.

When he was young, he went to a Latin school in Deventer. He stayed at that school from the year 1392 until 1399. In 1406, he joined a community at Mount St. Agnes. This place was near the city of Zwolle in the Netherlands. He became a priest in the year 1413.

His life had some difficult moments. In 1429, his community had to leave their home at Agnetenberg. This happened because of a disagreement involving a bishop in Utrecht. During this time, Thomas went to Arnhem to help his brother. His brother was sick, and Thomas stayed with him until he died in November 1432.

Even during hard times, Thomas kept writing. He wrote four small booklets between 1418 and 1427. These booklets eventually became his most famous work.

Today, many people still remember his work. Thomas More once said his book was one of three books everyone should own. Between the years 1500 and 1700, many versions of his book were published in English.
