He was born on August 21, 1567, in the Château de Sales. This was in a place called the Duchy of Savoy. His family was part of the high nobility in that land. His father was François de Sales, the Lord of Sales. His mother was a noblewoman named Françoise de Sionnaz.

Because he was born early, he was a very small baby. He grew up to be a tall and handsome man. He had blue-grey eyes and was known for being quiet.

Francis received a very good education for a young man. He studied at a college in Annecy when he was eight. Later, he went to the Collège de Clermont in Paris. There, he studied subjects like rhetoric and the humanities. He also learned how to ride horses and dance.

He later went to the University of Padua in Italy. In Padua, he studied both law and theology. He earned his doctorate in both of these subjects in 1592. This helped him prepare for his life of service.

His path to becoming a priest was not easy. His father wanted him to be a lawyer or a leader. His father even chose a wealthy woman for him to marry. However, Francis wanted to dedicate his life to God instead. He chose to stay single and follow a religious path.

He became a priest in 1593. Later, he became the Bishop of Geneva. Because some people in Geneva followed different beliefs, he lived in Annecy. He worked hard to organize the church in his area.

Francis was a very special kind of teacher and writer.

He wrote a famous book called "Introduction to the Devout Life." Most books back then were for priests, but he wrote this for regular people. He especially wanted to help women grow in their faith. He also wrote a book called "Treatise on the Love of God." He believed that people should show love and kindness to others. He was known for being very patient and gentle. People called him the "Gentleman Saint" because of this.

Francis did many things to help his community. He helped start a group for women called the Visitation in 1610. He did this with a woman named Jane Frances de Chantal.
