He lived during a time of massive change in Europe. Many people consider him a founder of modern conservatism. This is a way of thinking that values tradition and order. He was born in 1753 in the Duchy of Savoy. At that time, his home was part of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. His family had both French and Italian roots.

Maistre had many different jobs throughout his life. He studied law at the University of Turin and finished in 1774. He served as a senator in the Savoy Senate from 1787 to 1792. Later, he served as an ambassador to the Russian Empire from 1803 to 1817. He also worked as a minister of state in Turin. He was a subject of the King of Piedmont-Sardinia. His brother, Xavier, became a major general and a writer. Joseph even acted as a godfather to his younger brother.

His ideas changed a lot because of the French Revolution in 1789. At first, Maistre was a liberal who liked political reform. He even supported the American Revolution in his early speeches. However, the chaos of the Revolution alarmed him deeply. He believed that rejecting Christianity caused the violent Reign of Terror. Because of this, he began to defend strong kings and the Church. He argued that monarchs were chosen by God to lead. He also believed the Pope should have ultimate authority.

Maistre wrote many important books to share his views. In 1793, he wrote "Letters from a Savoyard Royalist." He also wrote "Five Paradoxes for the Marchioness of Navarre" in 1795. His book "On the Pope," published in 1819, explained his religious ideas. He believed that laws should not just come from human reason. Instead, he thought true authority comes from God. He even argued that genius helps people make big scientific discoveries. He pointed to thinkers like Isaac Newton as examples.

Many people still study his work today. His writings about Russian life helped the author Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy used them as sources for his novel "War and Peace." Maistre died on 26 February 1821 in Turin. He is buried in the Jesuit Church of the Holy Martyrs.
