He went with his friend Gustave de Beaumont. They traveled by steamboat on the Mississippi River. They also used stagecoaches to cross the South. They visited cities on the east coast and the north-west frontier. Tocqueville took many notes during this time. He wrote a famous book called *Democracy in America*. It was published in two parts in 1835 and 1840. This book looked at how democracy worked in a new land.

Tocqueville was also very active in the politics of France. He served in the French parliament for many years. He was a member of the lower house from 1839 to 1851. He represented the Manche department. He was a classical liberal. This means he believed in individual freedom. He also wanted a strong parliamentary government. He sometimes moved from the centre-left to the centre-right. People often had different views of his complex ideas.

His time in politics was often very busy and difficult. He helped write the new Constitution for the Second Republic. He wanted people to vote in elections. He believed this would help keep peace in the countryside. However, he also supported laws that limited some freedoms. He did this because he thought order was necessary. He wanted stability so that liberty could grow steadily. He did not want sudden changes to cause trouble.

Later in life, Tocqueville had to leave his political job. This happened after Louis Napoleon Bonaparte took power in 1851. Tocqueville tried to resist this change in government. He was even held at Vincennes for a short time. After he was released, he retired to his castle. He spent his final years writing in his library. He worked on a book called *The Old Regime and the Revolution*. He died in 1859 before he could finish it.
