He lived from July 29, 1805, to April 16, 1859. His work focused on the social conditions of individuals in Western societies. He specifically examined how people relate to the market and the state. Because of his deep observations, his writing is considered an early foundation of sociology and political science.

Tocqueville’s most famous work, *Democracy in America*, grew from a specific mission. In 1831, the July Monarchy sent him to the United States. His goal was to examine the American prison and penitentiary system. He traveled with his friend, Gustave de Beaumont. They moved from east-coast cities to the north-west frontier in Michigan. They used steamboats to travel down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. They also used stagecoaches to cross the South and move toward New York.

During his American travels, Tocqueville took extensive notes on his observations. He published a report on the penitentiary system after returning to France in 1832. However, his most significant achievement was his two-volume work, *Democracy in America*, published in 1835 and 1840. This book analyzed the nature of democracy itself. His ideas were interpreted in many ways across the world. In France and the United States, his work was seen as liberal. In the British Isles, both progressives and conservatives claimed his ideas as their own.

Tocqueville was also a deeply active figure in French politics. He served in the lower house of parliament for the Manche department from 1839 to 1851. As a classical liberal, he advocated for parliamentary government and free trade. He also defended abolitionist views. His political stance was complex and moved from the centre-left to the centre-right. In 1847, he attempted to found the Young Left (Jeune Gauche) party. This party aimed to advocate for wage increases and progressive taxes to address labor concerns.

After the Revolution of 1848, Tocqueville helped shape the Second Republic. He served on the commission that drafted the new Constitution between May and September 1848. He defended bicameralism, which is a system with two legislative chambers. He also supported universal suffrage, the right of all citizens to vote. He believed that voting would help the conservative countryside counteract the revolutionary spirit of Paris.

During this era, he also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from June to October 1849.

Despite his defense of liberty, Tocqueville often prioritized social order. During the June Days Uprising of 1848 and the unrest of 1849, he supported measures to restrict political freedoms. He believed that order was the "sine qua non," or essential condition, for serious politics. He wanted to create stability so that liberty could grow without being interrupted by violent revolutions.

This tension between individual freedom and the need for a stable state is a central theme in his life.

His political career ended abruptly due to the actions of Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. Following the coup of December 2, 1851, Tocqueville attempted to resist. He joined other deputies in Paris to protest the violation of constitutional limits. He was briefly detained at Vincennes before being released. After this, he retired to his castle to focus on historical writing. He spent his remaining years working on *The Old Regime and the Revolution*, which he began in 1856. He argued that the French Revolution helped modernize and centralize the French state.
