Michel Foucault was a famous French thinker who changed how we study history and society.

He worked as a philosopher, a historian, and a teacher. His big ideas looked at how power and knowledge work together. He wanted to see how these things affect human liberty, or freedom. Foucault studied how institutions use social control to manage people. He looked at how groups use rules to shape our lives. His work helps us understand the world in new ways.

Foucault used special methods to look at the past. He called one of his methods "archaeology."

This was not about digging in the dirt for bones. Instead, he looked at old ideas like an archaeologist looks at ruins. He wanted to see how certain ways of thinking began. He also used a method called "genealogy" in his later work. This helped him show how power works in our daily lives. These tools allowed him to study very complex topics.

Foucault was born on October 15, 1926, in Poitiers, France.

He grew up in a middle-class family. His father, Paul Foucault, was a local surgeon. Michel studied at the Lycée Henri-IV and the University of Paris. He earned degrees in both philosophy and psychology. During his youth, he was influenced by many great thinkers. He studied under teachers like Jean Hyppolite and Louis Althusser.

He wrote many important books during his long career. In 1961, he published "The History of Madness." He also wrote "The Birth of the Clinic" in 1963. Later, he wrote "The Order of Things" in 1966. In 1969, he released "The Archaeology of Knowledge." He also wrote "Discipline and Punish" in 1975. His book "The History of Sexuality" came out in 1976. These books explored how society treats different kinds of people.

Foucault's ideas connect to many different subjects today. Scholars in sociology and psychology still read his work. People who study communication and feminism use his theories too. He was a political activist who fought against racism. He also worked to stop homophobia and protect human rights. Foucault died in Paris in 1984 from HIV/AIDS. His death helped many people learn about this disease. His partner, Daniel Defert, started the AIDES charity in his memory.
