Menno's life began with many changes in his beliefs. He started as a Roman Catholic priest in 1515. At first, he did not study the Bible very much. Later, he began to look at the holy books very closely. He had many questions about how the church worked. One big question was about baptism. Most people were baptized as tiny babies. Menno believed that people should choose baptism for themselves. He called this "believer's baptism."

His journey was not always easy or peaceful. Menno grew up in Friesland during a time of war. His family was poor, and his land saw many battles. In 1535, his brother Pieter died in a violent fight. This was part of a struggle at a place called the Oldeklooster. This event caused Menno a lot of sadness and doubt. He eventually left the Catholic Church in early 1536. He decided to join the Anabaptists instead.
