They belong to the Anabaptist movement. This movement started during a time called the Radical Reformation. This was a period when people wanted to change how churches worked.

Mennonites focus on the teachings of Jesus. They believe in living a life that follows the Bible closely. Many people call them a peace church. This is because they value being nonviolent. They believe that followers should not use force to get back at others.

Their beliefs involve many special practices.

One main idea is believer's baptism. This means they only baptize people who can choose to believe for themselves. They do not baptize babies. They also practice things like washing feet to show they are servants. Some churches use seven special ordinances. These include communion, marriage, and anointing with oil. They also practice the holy kiss and prayer covering. Many groups also value church discipline. This helps keep the community strong and focused on their faith.

The group's name comes from a man named Menno Simons.

He was a priest from the Low Countries. He left the Roman Catholic Church in 1536. He became a very important leader for the Anabaptists. He helped organize different groups into one community. Before him, other leaders like Conrad Grebel and Felix Manz started the movement. They held a meeting in Zurich in 1525. This meeting was the beginning of the Anabaptist way. Many early leaders faced hard times. They were often punished by leaders who did not like their new ideas.

Some are called Old Order Mennonites. They choose to live without much modern technology. They might use a horse and carriage to travel. Other groups are called Conservative Mennonites. They use modern tools but still wear plain clothes. Then there are mainline Mennonites. They dress and look like most other people in the world.

Despite these differences, they all share a history of living simply. This simple way of life grew from their need to focus on community and faith.
