Pietism is a special movement within the Lutheran faith.

It focuses on how people live their daily lives. Many followers believe that being a Christian is about a personal change of heart. They want to live a holy life through devotion. This movement is different from just following rules. It emphasizes a deep, inner connection to faith. This way of thinking has changed many churches around the world.

How does Pietism work in practice? Many people meet in small groups called conventicles. They meet apart from the main church service. In these groups, they pray and read the Bible together. They use this time to encourage one another in their faith. They believe a true believer experiences a struggle with sin. This struggle leads to a big decision to start a new life. This new life is centered on Christ and holy living.

The movement began in Germany during the late 17th century. A man named Philipp Spener is known as the Father of Pietism.

He was born in 1635 in a place called Alsace. Spener wanted to see a moral reform in the Lutheran Church. In 1675, he wrote a famous book called Pia desideria. This book suggested six ways to fix the church. One idea was to study the Bible in private meetings. Another idea was to treat others with kindness instead of being bitter.

Pietism spread very far from its home in Germany. It moved through Europe to places like Switzerland and Scandinavia.

In Norway, a man named Hans Nielsen Hauge was a leader. In Sweden, people like Carl Olof Rosenius were important. The movement even reached the Batak Lands in Indonesia. In North America, German and Scandinavian immigrants brought these ideas. This helped start a large movement called evangelicalism. Today, evangelicalism has about 300 million followers worldwide.

Many different religious groups have been shaped by Pietist ideas. For example, the priest John Wesley started the Methodist movement. Another man named Alexander Mack started the Anabaptist Schwarzenau Brethren. Some people, called Radical Pietists, even left the Lutheran Church entirely. In Scandinavia, the Laestadian Lutheran revival began in the 19th century. Today, groups like the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus follow these traditions. Pietism shows how one idea can travel across many lands and cultures.
