Spener wanted to make the church stronger and newer. He believed that change comes from the people in the church. He thought every person should be very devoted to their faith. This focus on personal change is a main part of his ideas. He wanted people to be more knowledgeable about their beliefs.

Spener had a special plan for how the church could improve. He wrote six main ideas in his famous book, *Pia Desideria*. First, he wanted people to study holy books in small groups. Second, he wanted regular people to help more with church work. Third, he believed faith should change how a person acts. Fourth, he said people should talk about religion with love and humility. Fifth, he wanted pastors to be well-educated and very holy. Finally, he wanted preaching to help ordinary people grow in faith.

Spener had a very busy and interesting life. He was born in 1635 in a place called Rappoltsweiler. At that time, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. He studied many subjects like history and philosophy in Strasbourg. In 1653, he earned a master's degree there. He also worked as a tutor for two princes. Between 1659 and 1662, he visited several famous universities. During this time, he also began studying heraldry, which is the study of family shields.

Spener worked in many different cities throughout his life. He served as a chief pastor in Frankfurt. While he was there, he wrote his most important books. In 1686, he went to Dresden to work for an Elector. Later, in 1691, he moved to Berlin to work at St. Nicholas. He was a very famous person in Berlin. He even helped influence the start of the University of Halle in 1694.

Not everyone liked Spener's new ideas. Many leaders in the Lutheran Church disagreed with him. In 1695, a group in Wittenberg accused him of 264 errors. This was a very hard time for him. He faced many attacks and mean words from others. Even so, he kept writing and teaching until he died. He passed away in Berlin in 1705 at age 70. His many writings are still studied by people today.
