He wanted to change how children learned. His big idea was to teach using the "head, hand, and heart." This meant children should use their minds, their bodies, and their feelings. He believed this was the best way to grow. Because of his work, almost everyone in Switzerland could read by 1830.

As a young boy in Zürich, Pestalozzi saw many hard things. He visited poor farmers with his grandfather. He saw children working in factories instead of going to school. These children were often hungry and did not know how to help themselves. This made a deep impression on him. He wanted to find a way to help people live better lives. He even tried to become a clergyman to help others.

Before he became a teacher, Pestalozzi tried to be a farmer. In 1769, he married Anna Schulthess. They moved to a place called Neuhof to start a farm.

However, the land was not good for farming. He even tried to start a wool-spinning business to make money. These plans did not work well. He and his family faced many years of poverty and debt.

Even when he was poor, he kept writing about his ideas. He wrote a story called "Leonard and Gertrude." This story showed how good teaching could bring harmony to a village. He also wrote many other books and articles. In 1798, things changed in Switzerland. A war meant many children were left without homes. Pestalozzi went to the town of Stans to help these orphans.

At the orphanage in Stans, Pestalozzi did many jobs. He was a teacher, a guardian, and even a nurse. He did not have many school supplies. He taught the children to use their attention and their memory. He wanted them to learn how to observe the world. Later, he worked in a town called Burgdorf.

His work helped create new ways to teach people everywhere. Today, people remember him in places like the Pestalozziwiese in Zürich.
