He was born in Basel on May 10, 1760. He spent much of his childhood moving between two different places. He lived in Basel during the summer months. During the winter, he lived in the village of Hausen im Wiesental. His father worked as a weaver in that village. These two different settings stayed in Hebel's memory forever. They helped him understand the lives of both rich and poor people.

He wrote 32 poems for his friends in the countryside. He felt very proud to make this local language famous. He also wrote many stories for a yearly calendar. He was the editor for the Rheinländischer Hausfreund starting in 1807. He wrote about 30 stories every year for this book. These stories included funny tales and news to teach good lessons.

Learning and teaching were huge parts of Hebel's life. He went to school in Basel and Schopfheim. He later studied theology, which is the study of religion. In 1778, he graduated from the Gymnasium Illustre in Karlsruhe. He held many different jobs like a tutor and an assistant teacher. By 1798, he became a professor and a court deacon. He even taught subjects like botany and natural history. He loved studying plants and kept a collection of them. A botanist even named a plant Hebelia allemannica to honor him.

Hebel's life had many important moments and roles. He worked as a director of a school in Karlsruhe in 1808. In 1819, he became a prelate in the Lutheran church. This was a leading position in the church. He also sat in the Parliament of Baden. He used his position to help with education and social policy. He once declined a job in Freiburg im Breisgau. He did this because the Grand Duke of Baden asked him not to take it. He always wanted to be a simple parish priest.

Many famous writers loved the work Hebel created. Great authors like Goethe and Tolstoy praised his writing. His Bible stories were even used as textbooks until 1855. Hebel died on September 22, 1826, in Schwetzingen.
