He lived from 1455 to 1522. He was a humanist and a teacher. Humanists were people who studied old languages and ideas. Reuchlin focused on learning Greek and Hebrew. His work helped bring this knowledge to Germany. He traveled to many places like Italy and France. This helped him share what he learned with others.

Reuchlin's life changed because of a few lucky moments. He had a very fine singing voice. This voice helped him get a job in a royal house. He later traveled to the University of Paris. There, he began to study Greek very seriously. He also went to the University of Basel. In 1477, he earned his master's degree there. He began teaching classical Latin to his students. He also explained the ideas of Aristotle in Greek.

His journey took him across many different lands. In 1482, he traveled to Italy with Count Eberhard. He visited cities like Florence and Rome. In Italy, he met many very smart people. He also met a man named Pico della Mirandola. Later, he went on an embassy to Linz in 1492. There, he studied Hebrew with a Jewish physician named Jakob ben Jehiel. This helped him become an expert in the language. He even studied with Obadja Sforno in Rome in 1498.

Reuchlin wrote many books to help other students. He wrote a book called De Rudimentis Hebraicis in 1506. This book was a guide to Hebrew grammar. He also wrote books to help people learn Greek. He wanted people to read the Bible more clearly. He believed that knowing the original languages was the best way. He even made a manual to help people preach better.

Not everyone agreed with Reuchlin's ideas. A man named Johannes Pfefferkorn wanted to destroy Hebrew books. Pfefferkorn thought these books were bad for the faith. Reuchlin fought to protect these books instead. He told Emperor Maximilian that the books were valuable. He suggested that universities should have special classes for Hebrew. This led to a long and difficult legal battle. Even though many people were against him, the trial was eventually stopped in 1516.
