He was a Dutch humanist and a Christian priest. Being a humanist meant he studied old ideas and language very deeply. He was also a skilled philologist, which is a person who studies how languages work. Erasmus is remembered as a major figure in Western culture. His many writings helped shape how people thought about religion and education.

He was a scholar who wrote in a natural and correct Latin style.

Erasmus had a very busy way of working. He was a voracious writer who loved to record new ideas. He often wrote or answered up to 40 letters every single day.

He usually woke up early to write by hand. He did not like to work after dinner. To write books quickly, he used a special method. He made notes on everything he read. He organized these notes by topic and kept them in boxes. When it was time to write a book, he just pulled the right notes from his boxes.

His life began in Rotterdam in the late 1460s.

Some say he was born in 1466, while others think it was 1469. His father, Gerard, was a priest. His mother was Margaretha Rogerius. Sadly, both of his parents died from the plague in 1483. This left Erasmus and his brother Peter as orphans. Even though he faced hard times, he received a very good education. He attended several different schools for Latin and other subjects. This early training helped him become a great scholar.

Erasmus wrote a huge amount of work during his life. A catalogue of his writings has 444 different entries.

He wrote many types of books, like poems, plays, and sermons. One of his most important jobs was studying the New Testament. He created new versions of these holy texts in both Greek and Latin. Up to 300,000 copies of his various editions were printed while he was alive. By the 1530s, his books made up 10% to 20% of all book sales in Europe. He was truly the most read author of his age.

His ideas connected many different groups of people. He lived during the Reformation, a time of big changes in the church. Erasmus wanted to fix the church from the inside. Because of this, he often sat in the middle of arguments. He was a friend to many kings and even popes.

Some reformers, like Martin Luther, disagreed with his views. Other people in the Catholic Church also pushed back against him. Even though people disagreed, his work helped create many famous translations of the Bible. His ideas about peace and learning still matter to historians today.
