Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who wanted to help people live calm lives.

He believed the main goal of philosophy was to find freedom from fear. He also wanted people to live without pain. To do this, he taught that people should live simple lives. He thought being self-sufficient was a great way to be happy. Surrounding yourself with good friends was also a key part of his plan.

His ideas about the world were based on tiny, invisible pieces. He called these pieces atoms. Epicurus believed that atoms move through empty space called the void. These atoms have different shapes, sizes, and weights. Sometimes, atoms move in a straight line. Other times, they might "swerve" or move off their path.

This swerve was a very important idea to him. He thought this random movement allowed humans to have free will. Without the swerve, everything might just be a chain of cause and effect.

Epicurus was born in 341 BC on the island of Samos.

His parents were Neocles and Chaerestrate. He received a typical education for a Greek boy. He studied under a teacher named Pamphilus for about four years. Later, he studied with a man named Nausiphanes. Nausiphanes taught him about the ideas of Democritus. Epicurus even served in the military for a time. He eventually moved to Athens to start his own school.

In 306 BC, he established a famous school called The Garden in Athens.

This school was a special place where people lived together. They shared their things and ate simple meals. The school was open to many different people. For example, many women joined the school as students. Some of these students included women named Themista and Batis. The members of The Garden even held special festivals and shared banquets. They celebrated the memories of their friends and family through special rites.

Even though many of his 300 books are lost, his ideas stayed important.

During the Middle Ages, people often misunderstood him. They wrongly thought he only cared about eating too much or drinking. However, his ideas became popular again in the 1500s. A priest named Pierre Gassendi helped bring his views back to life. Later, famous thinkers like John Locke and Karl Marx were influenced by him. His work shows how much people have wondered about atoms and happiness for a long time.
