He was a lawyer, a writer, and a leader. He lived during a time when the Roman Republic was changing into an empire. This was a very busy and difficult time for Rome. Cicero worked hard to protect the old ways of the Republic. He was famous for his many books and his great speeches. People still study his work to understand how Rome used to work.

Cicero was born on January 3, 106 BC, in a town called Arpinum.

His family was wealthy and had good connections in the city. His name, Cicero, actually comes from the Latin word for chickpea. This was a nickname from a long time ago in his family. As a young man, he studied very hard in Rome and Greece.

He used his voice to win many cases in the law courts. One famous case was against a man named Gaius Verres. Cicero spent a long time gathering facts to prove Verres was wrong. By winning that case, Cicero became known as the best speaker in Rome. He even created many new Latin words to talk about big ideas. These words helped people discuss philosophy and politics more clearly.

Cicero also held very high jobs in the Roman government. In 63 BC, he served as a consul, which was a top leader.

Even when things were hard, he kept trying to help the Roman Senate. He believed that laws and speaking well were the best tools for leaders.

After the leader Julius Caesar died, Rome faced more fighting.
