People called him the "Asylum of Right." This meant they saw him as a safe place for justice. He was also known as the "Treasurer of the Laws." He was so respected that law students were called "Papinianistae." This name meant they were worthy to study his work. Many people thought he was the greatest lawyer ever.

He held many important jobs for the Roman Empire. He served as a master of petitions. This meant he handled formal requests. He also worked as an attorney general. Later, he became a praetorian prefect. He even served as a captain of the guard. He was a very trusted person for the leaders. He helped manage the laws of the land. He also worked as a treasurer for the Emperor.

Papinian was born around 142 CE. He came from a place called Emesa. This place is in Syria. He was likely related to Julia Domna. She was the second wife of Emperor Septimius Severus. Some say he studied law under a teacher named Scaevola. He was a close friend of the Emperor. In 207 CE, he traveled to Britain. He went there with the Emperor to help in York.

His life ended during a very difficult time. The Emperor had two sons named Caracalla and Geta. Papinian tried to keep peace between these brothers. However, Caracalla did not want to share power. Caracalla took control for himself. This led to a very sad event in 212 CE. Caracalla ordered that Papinian be beheaded. This happened after Geta was killed. One source says many people were killed during this time.

Even though he is gone, his work lived on. He wrote many books about the law. One was called "Quaestiones" and had 37 books. He also wrote "Responsa." He even wrote a manual about streets and bridges. His legal ideas were very important. In 426 CE, a law made his views decisive. His ideas helped form the big law books of the future. He remains a huge part of legal history.
