Yohanan ben Zakkai was a very important Jewish sage. He lived during the first century CE. People called him a tanna, which means he was a great teacher. He was a key person in making the Mishnah. The Mishnah is a core text for Rabbinic Judaism.

Many people call him by the title Rabban. He is remembered for helping his faith survive a hard time. His life changed how people practiced their religion forever.

He was a man who loved to study the Torah. The Talmud says he was one of 80 students of Hillel and Shammai. He studied every part of the Torah. This included practical rules and deep, secret ideas. He was so focused that he never engaged in idle chatter. He would not even walk four cubits without studying.

He even wore his Tefillin, or small boxes with holy words, all day long.

During a war, Jerusalem was under a siege. Yohanan wanted to find a way to have peace. He made a secret plan to escape the city. He hid inside a coffin to get out safely. His nephew, Ben Batiach, helped him with this escape.

Once free, he met a military commander named Vespasian. Yohanan predicted that Vespasian would become the Emperor. In return, he asked for three special wishes. He asked for the safety of Yavne and its sages. He also asked for the safety of the descendants of Rabban Gamliel. His third wish was for a doctor to help Rabbi Zadok.

After the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, things were very different. Yohanan turned his school at Yavne into a new religious center. He helped the Sanhedrin, which was a council of leaders. They had to decide how to worship without the Temple altars. Yohanan helped persuade them to use prayer instead of animal sacrifices. This change is still the basis for Jewish worship today. He also made many new rules, called edicts, for the community. These rules helped people observe holidays like Rosh HaShanah and Sukkot in new ways.

Yohanan lived to be 120 years old. He spent his last years teaching at Bror Hayil. When he died, his students went back to Yavneh. He is buried in a place called Tiberias. His tomb is in the same burial area as Maimonides. People still visit his site today. His story shows how much one person can help a community grow.
