Akiva's life began in a very humble way. He was once an uneducated shepherd working for a wealthy man. He could not read or write when he was forty years old. However, his wife, Rachel, saw his good character and wanted him to learn. She encouraged him to study the Torah, which is the Jewish holy text. Akiva worked very hard to reach his goal. He spent twelve years away from home to study. He sold wood from the forest to pay for food and light. He used half his earnings for his family and the other half to keep a fire burning for his studies.

Akiva became a master teacher with many followers. Some stories say he had 12,000 students, while others say he had 24,000 or even 48,000. He studied under famous teachers like Eliezer ben Hurcanus. He also taught many famous scholars like Rabbi Meir. Akiva lived in places like Lod and Beneberak. He was known for being very kind to people. He acted as an overseer to help the poor and the sick. He believed that even leaders should follow the law. He was a friend to a leader named Rabban Gamaliel.

Akiva lived during a difficult time under Roman rule. The Roman government made rules that stopped people from teaching Jewish laws. Akiva chose to keep teaching his faith anyway. Because he did not follow the Roman rules, he was arrested. He was sentenced to death by a Roman official named Turnus Rufus. This happened around the year 135 CE. Some people believe he was involved in the Bar Kokhba revolt. Others think his death was strictly about his religious teaching. He faced his final moments with great courage.

Even in his final moments, Akiva focused on his faith. He is said to have said his prayers very calmly. He wanted to show his love for God with all his soul. He died while saying the Shema, a very important Jewish prayer.
