He lived during a time of big changes in history. He was active from about 30 BCE to 10 CE. This was when King Herod and the Roman emperor Augustus ruled. Hillel came from a place called Babylon to live in Israel. He was a very hard worker. While he studied the Torah, he also worked as a woodcutter. He wanted to learn everything he could about his faith.

Many people remember Hillel for his very kind way of teaching. He was known for being gentle and patient with others. One famous story tells of a man who wanted to learn the Torah. The man asked to learn everything while standing on only one foot. A teacher named Shammai sent the man away. But Hillel was different. He spoke kindly to the man and taught him. This lesson is often called the Golden Rule. It teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated.

As a leader, Hillel had many students to teach. Some records say he had eighty pairs of disciples. These were people who followed his teachings closely. His students included people like Jonathan ben Uzziel and Yohanan ben Zakkai. Hillel also started a special school called the House of Hillel. He was a very important authority among the Pharisees. This group of people helped shape what we now call Rabbinic Judaism. He spent forty years as a leader for his people.

Hillel also made rules to help his community stay strong. One important rule was called the Prozbul. This rule helped with how people paid back loans of money. It was meant to repair the social order of the world. This helped people who lent money and people who needed it. Hillel also cared deeply about people who were struggling. He once gave a horse to a man who had become poor. He wanted to make sure the man could still exercise.
