The word Talmud comes from a Semitic root meaning "teach" or "study." It serves as a primary source for Jewish law and theology. For many centuries, it was the centerpiece of Jewish culture. It acted as a guide for daily life and all Jewish thought.

The text works by combining two main parts. The first part is the Mishnah. This is a collection of legal opinions and debates from the second century. The second part is the Gemara. The Gemara is a long commentary on the Mishnah.

It records the discussions of many rabbis known as the Amoraim. These scholars used a process of questioning and answering. They analyzed laws through logic and stories. This mix of law and storytelling is very important to the text.

History shows that the Talmud emerged over several centuries. This happened between the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE and the seventh century. Scholars believe the Babylonian Talmud was compiled by Rav Ashi and Ravina II. Rav Ashi led the Sura Academy from 375 to 427 CE.

Tradition says the work was finished around 475 CE. Later, the Savoraim likely made a final version in the sixth century. This long process turned oral teachings into a written record.

There are two major versions of the Talmud. The first is the Jerusalem Talmud. It was compiled in the Land of Israel between the fourth and fifth centuries. It uses a Western Aramaic dialect. The second is the Babylonian Talmud. This version was made in centers like Nehardea and Pumbedita.

The Babylonian Talmud is much larger. It contains about 2.5 million words. It is usually the version people mean when they say "Talmud." It covers 37 of the 63 Mishnaic tractates.

The Talmud is organized into a specific structure. It follows the Six Orders of the Mishnah. These are divided into 63 tractates. Each tractate focuses on one subject area. Within these, there are 517 chapters.
