He was born in a place called Emesa. He was likely from Syria. Many people thought he was a hero of the law. Law students even used his name to show they were good. He was a close friend of Emperor Severus. The Emperor took him to Britain in the year 207 CE. In Rome, Papinian held many big jobs. He was a master of petitions, which are formal requests. He also served as a captain of the guard.

Later, Papinian tried to help two brothers stay at peace. These brothers were Caracalla and Geta. They were sons of the Emperor. But Caracalla did not like his brother. Caracalla took power for himself. This led to a very sad time. Caracalla ordered Papinian to be killed.

Papinian died in the year 212 CE. He wrote many books about law. Some books were about city rules for streets and bridges. His ideas helped shape laws for a long time.
