He lived during a time called the Protestant Reformation. He was born in Oudewater around 1560. His early life was very difficult for him. He became an orphan when he was still a young boy. His father died, and his mother was killed during a massacre in 1575. A priest named Theodorus Aemilius adopted him. This kindness helped him continue his education.

Arminius was a very gifted student who studied in many places. He went to Leiden University to study theology. He also traveled to study in Geneva and Basel. He was so smart that the university in Basel offered him a doctorate. He turned it down because he was only about 24 years old. He wanted to finish his schooling first. Teachers in Geneva and Basel wrote letters saying he was a very excellent student. They said he had a great mind for understanding deep things.

In 1587, Arminius began working as a pastor in Amsterdam. He was a very dedicated leader for his people. He was even asked to help organize the schools in the city. In 1602, a plague spread through Amsterdam. Arminius showed great courage during this scary time. He went into houses filled with sick people to bring them water. He also used money to help neighbors care for those who were ill. He was ordained as a pastor in 1588.

As he taught, Arminius began to share new ideas about faith. He focused on how people experience grace and rebirth. He believed that people could feel a desire for salvation through the Holy Spirit. This caused many disagreements with other religious leaders. Some people thought his ideas went against what was usually taught. One of his colleagues, Petrus Plancius, began to argue with him openly. Even the leaders of Amsterdam tried to help everyone stay peaceful. They wanted people to live together without fighting over these big questions.

In 1603, Arminius became a professor at Leiden University. This happened after two other teachers died from the plague. He began to have very public debates with a man named Franciscus Gomarus. They disagreed strongly about how God chooses people. Gomarus was a very strong defender of traditional Calvinist views. Arminius was seen more as a seeker who asked many questions. These debates changed religious history forever. His ideas became the foundation for a movement called Arminianism.
