He lived during the Protestant Reformation, a time of great religious change. During this time, many people were leaving the Catholic Church. Canisius worked hard to help people understand their faith. He was a leader in the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. He was actually the very first person from the Netherlands to join this group. His work helped the Catholic Church grow again in many parts of Europe.

Canisius used many different ways to teach his beliefs. He was a famous preacher who spoke to large crowds. He also spent a lot of time writing books for others to read. One of his most famous books was the "German Catechism." This book helped people in German-speaking lands learn Catholic ideas more easily. He also wrote books about Mary, the mother of Jesus. He even added a special sentence to the "Hail Mary" prayer. This helped people connect more deeply with their faith through prayer.

His life began in 1521 in a place called Nijmegen. His father, Jacob Kanis, was a wealthy man in the city. Peter went to study at the University of Cologne. He earned a master's degree there when he was only 19 years old. In 1543, he joined the Jesuits after meeting a man named Peter Faber. He became a priest in 1546. Later, he traveled to many places like Austria, Hungary, and Poland. He even helped start the University of Innsbruck in 1562.

Canisius had a huge impact on many different countries. He helped bring people back to the Catholic Church in Bavaria and the Rhineland. In Poland, his work helped the country stay Catholic for a long time. He was a very influential teacher in many cities. For example, he was a main preacher in the Cathedral of Augsburg for many years. He also met with important leaders like Emperor Ferdinand I. Even when he was old, he never stopped his important work.
