Francis Xavier was a very famous missionary who traveled to many far lands. He was born on April 7, 1506, in the Castle of Xavier. This place was in the Kingdom of Navarre. He came from a noble and wealthy family. His father was a leader in the Royal Council of Navarre.

His life changed when he went to study in Paris. He lived at the University of Paris for eleven years. During this time, he was known as a talented athlete and high-jumper.

While studying in Paris, Francis met a man named Ignatius of Loyola. At first, Francis did not want to become a priest. He wanted to be successful in the worldly life. However, Ignatius eventually convinced him to change his path. In 1534, Francis and six other students met in a crypt in Paris. They made special vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the Pope.
