Members make a profession of perpetual poverty, chastity, and obedience. This means they live simply and stay dedicated to their religious life. They also promise a special obedience to the Pope. This special promise means they are ready to go anywhere. They might be sent to live in very difficult conditions. They do this to serve their mission. Their goal is to do everything for the greater glory of God.

A Spanish nobleman named Ignatius of Loyola started it. He was a soldier before he became a religious leader. In 1534, he met with six companions in a crypt near Paris. They met in a place called Montmartre. These seven men made their first promises together. Later, they traveled to Italy to ask the Pope for approval. In 1540, Pope Paul III officially gave them permission to exist. Ignatius was chosen to be the very first leader of the group.

History shows that the Jesuits have had many important roles.

They helped during a time called the Counter-Reformation. They also built many schools and colleges around the world. By the time Ignatius died in 1556, they had 74 colleges. They sent missionaries to places like Japan, India, and Ethiopia. However, the group also faced many hard times. In 1773, Pope Clement XIV officially stopped the order for a while. The Church finally brought the Jesuits back in 1814.

Today, the Jesuits continue to influence many parts of life.
