Ignatian spirituality is a special way of living within the Catholic faith. It is based on the life and ideas of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. He was a man from Spain who lived during the 1500s.

Ignatius founded a group called the Jesuit order. His main goal was to help people find God's will in their lives. He believed that people should use their freedom to make the best choices possible. This means not letting personal likes or dislikes control every single decision.

This way of thinking works through a set of tools called the Spiritual Exercises. These exercises help people learn how to make good choices between two different goods. Sometimes a person must choose between two things that both seem good. Ignatian followers look for the "more," which is the choice that best serves God.

This process helps people become more detached from worldly things. They try to be happy whether they are rich or poor, or healthy or sick.

The history of these ideas began with a major change in Ignatius's life. In 1521, he was a soldier during the Siege of Pamplona. He suffered a very bad injury to his right leg during the battle. While he was healing, he stayed at a place called Montserrat. There, he left his military tools before an image of the Virgin of Montserrat.

He later spent ten months at Manresa and studied in Paris. These experiences helped him write the Spiritual Exercises.

There are many important practices used by those who follow this path. One key practice is the examen, which is a way to review the day. People might do a general examen at night to see how they lived. They might also do a particular examen to focus on one specific fault.

This helps them stay aware of their own actions and desires. Many people also meet with a spiritual director for guidance. This guide helps them stay honest and helps them grow in their faith.

Ignatian spirituality connects deeply to how people see the whole world. Ignatius taught that we should find God in all things. This means there is no gap between the sacred and the everyday. Because of this, many Jesuits have worked in science, literature, and the arts.

They aim to use all their strength to help their neighbors. They believe that loving God is best shown through real deeds. This helps them live out their faith in every part of life.
