Ignatian spirituality is a specific tradition within the Catholic faith. It is based on the life and experiences of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius was a 16th-century Spanish man. He eventually founded the Jesuit order, also known as the Society of Jesus. This spiritual path focuses on helping individuals discern the will of God. The primary goal is to achieve a high degree of freedom. This freedom allows a person to make choices without being controlled by inordinate attachments. In this context, an inordinate attachment is an excessive or unhealthy desire. By overcoming these, followers aim to make decisions based solely on God's purpose.

The core mechanism of this spirituality is found in a work called the Spiritual Exercises. This book provides a structured process for prayer and reflection. A central concept within these exercises is the idea of "choice." Hans Urs von Balthasar noted that choice sits at the center of the exercises. Often, people must choose between two different goods. Ignatian thought suggests looking for the "more," or "magis" in Latin. This means selecting the option that leads to a greater service of God. This process helps a person regulate their life to better follow their faith.

Ignatian spirituality includes several distinct characteristics and practices. One major principle is the pursuit of God's greater glory. Ignatius believed humans were created to praise, reverence, and serve God. Another aspect is the emphasis on union with Jesus. During the month-long Spiritual Exercises, a person spends three weeks contemplating Jesus. They look at his infancy, his public ministry, his passion, and his risen life. To deepen this connection, Ignatius suggested the "application of the senses." This is a method of contemplation where one uses their senses to imagine scenes from the life of Jesus. This practice aims to help the believer love and follow him more closely.

Self-awareness is maintained through a practice called the examen. This is a guided method of prayerful review. There are two main types of examen used by followers. The general examen is often performed at the end of the day. It serves as a broad review of one's entire day. The particular examen is often done in the middle of the day. It focuses on a specific fault or area that a person wants to improve. The examen helps individuals notice their actions, desires, and spiritual state. It allows them to see where they might need to change or grow.

History shows that these ideas grew from Ignatius's personal transformation. In 1521, Ignatius was a soldier during the Siege of Pamplona. He suffered a severe injury to his right leg during this battle. During his recovery, he stayed with the Benedictines at Montserrat. He left his military equipment before an image of the Virgin of Montserrat. This act symbolized his shift away from his old life. He later spent ten months at Manresa. There, he discovered "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas à Kempis. He eventually completed parts of the Spiritual Exercises while studying in Paris.

Spiritual direction is another essential part of this tradition. Ignatius believed that meditation and the examen are best done with guidance. A spiritual director is an experienced person who meets with the follower. These meetings happen on a regular basis, such as weekly or monthly. The director helps the person stay honest and can prevent excessive impulses. While traditionally a priest, many laypersons now serve as directors. The director's role is not to explain everything. Instead, they present the exercises so God can communicate with the person.

Finally, Ignatian spirituality connects to a broad view of the world. Ignatius taught the concept of "finding God in all things." This means there is no divide between the sacred and the everyday. Because of this, Jesuits have been active in many different fields. They have contributed to the sciences, literature, and the graphic arts. The spirituality also emphasizes "effective love," which is love shown through deeds. This is contrasted with "affective love," which is based only on feelings. Followers aim to use all their strength for the salvation and perfection of their neighbors.
