As of 2026, it has between 1.28 and 1.41 billion baptized members. The word "Catholic" comes from a Greek word meaning "universal." This name was used as early as the second century. One of the first written uses was by Ignatius of Antioch around AD 100. Later, the emperor Theodosius I helped make it the state church of the Roman Empire in 380. Today, many followers live in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Leaders help guide the many people in the church. The pope is the head of the whole church. He is seen as the successor of Saint Peter. The pope lives in the Diocese of Rome. He also leads through a central authority called the Holy See. This central group is known as the Roman Curia. The church is organized into nearly 3,500 areas called dioceses. These areas are governed by bishops.

Catholics believe the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. They also honor the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God. Many people join religious orders or monastic communities to live in special ways. These groups help share different ways of worship and prayer around the world.

History shows how the church grew and changed over time. In the early days, the Roman Empire's roads helped spread new ideas. At first, many Christians faced hard times under Roman rule. This changed in 313 when Constantine the Great legalized the faith.

Later, the church faced splits with other groups. One big split happened in 1054 with the Eastern Orthodox Church. In the 1500s, the Protestant Reformation also created new Christian traditions. These events shaped how the church interacts with others today.

Beyond prayer, the church works to help people in need. It teaches followers to care for the poor and the sick.

The church runs tens of thousands of schools and hospitals. This makes it one of the largest providers of health care and education. In the past, monks helped save ancient books and art. This helped preserve history for everyone to learn about later. Today, the church continues to be a large part of life in many countries.
