They follow the teachings and spiritual ways of Saint Francis of Assisi. This group includes three main orders for men. One is the Order of Friars Minor, which is the largest. There is also an order for women called the Order of Saint Clare.

A Third Order exists for both men and women. Some members live in religious communities, while others live in the world. They all try to follow the ideals of their founder in their daily lives.

The life of a Franciscan is based on simplicity and service.

Francis of Assisi was born to a wealthy cloth merchant. He chose to leave his rich life behind to follow his faith. He wanted to live in solidarity with poor people. To show this, he wore a simple tunic like a peasant.

His followers were called "Little Brothers" because they rejected luxury. They often traveled and preached in the streets. In the early days, they were not allowed to own any property. They had to beg for food while they shared their message.

The history of the order began in Italy quite long ago.

Francis began his preaching around the year 1207. He traveled to Rome to speak with Pope Innocent III. In 1209, the Pope gave his approval for the new order. Francis also worked with many important followers. These included Clare of Assisi and Anthony of Padua.

Later, the order grew and moved into many different places. They even established a presence in the Holy Land.

There are many different branches within the Franciscan family today.

The first order has three main groups. These are the Friars Minor, the Conventuals, and the Capuchins. The Capuchins were founded much later, in the year 1520. The Conventuals were formed in 1209.

In 2013, the Order of Friars Minor had 12,476 members. The Capuchins had 10,355 members at that time. These numbers show how large and diverse the group has become over hundreds of years.

Franciscan ideas still connect to how people live today.

Many people find inspiration in the idea of living simply. The order has also spread to other traditions. Some smaller Protestant orders exist in the Lutheran and Anglican churches. Some communities are even ecumenical, meaning they include many different Christian groups. Whether living in a monastery or a regular home, members still look to the Rule of Saint Francis for guidance.
