Many people call them the Order of Preachers. This is why members often put the letters OP after their names. The group is made of many different people. This includes friars, nuns, and active sisters. There are also lay members who are not priests or nuns.

The order focuses on two main goals. They want to preach the gospel to others. They also want to help save souls through teaching. This work makes them very important in religious history.

Being a Dominican involves a balance of two different ways of living. They practice what is called a "mixed" spirituality. This means they are active in the world by preaching. At the same time, they are contemplative. Contemplative means they spend much time in study, prayer, and meditation.

They believe it is impossible to preach things you do not understand. Because of this, study is a major part of their life. They use learning as a way to defend their faith. This focus on education helped them become leaders in intellectual life.

A priest named Dominic de Guzmán started the order.

He was born in Spain and lived in France. As a young man, he loved studying theology. During a hard time called a famine, he even sold his books to help neighbors. Dominic wanted a new kind of group. He wanted people who could travel among the cities. Unlike older monks, these men did not stay behind walls. They traveled to talk to people in their own languages.

The order grew very quickly during the Middle Ages.

Pope Honorius III officially approved the order in December 1216. In 1217, the Pope gave them the power to preach everywhere. Dominic sent followers to famous universities like Paris and Bologna. They even set up a center in Oxford in 1221. By 1220, they had a home in Rome at Santa Sabina. This helped the order spread across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Many famous thinkers have been part of the Dominican Order.
